After Vivien Tiano was re-elected as President at our Annual meeting last October, we have had a very busy and sociable year. Our first event was a trip to Stoke theatre to see The Full Monty, very much enjoyed by all! November’s meeting was a talk on the work of the British Legion by Trilby Shaw who was a fountain of knowledge on this subject. Fair Trade goods were also on sale at this meeting. A busy December started with an outing to Denby Pottery, a trip to the ACWW Christmas Market at Derbyshire House and supporting the DFWI Carol Service. Our own Christmas Party was, as usual a good start to the festivities of Christmas. Joy Brandrick was presented with the cup for winning the most monthly competitions at our Knit and Natter evening in January. We knitted squares which were later put together into blankets by Jean Jagger.

Vivien announced that she was willing to take on the role of Group convenor as there had been no interest from anyone in the group. In February we voted on the suggested resolutions and listened to an intresting talk on the work of RABI by Angela Sargent.”My Secret Garden” by Derek Higgot at our March Open meeting with 11 visitors, was so brilliantly put across, that we decieded to run an outing to his garden later in the summer.
Our social evening had been well attended and £68 raised for WI funds. We have decided to get together to try to put our archives into a display and as Sue Hartley has quite a few photos etc. she has kindly let us use her home to sort these out. An amble around the British Countryside, with Ted Gray in April was followed by our Resolutions meeting and Queens 90th Celebration party in May
June found us hearing about the History of Ladybird Books with Paul Newsham and Jenny West tempted us with a cookery demonstration “Summer Madness” with tasters and a raffle for the food she had prepared. On a lovely warm August afternoon we enjoyed our outing to Melbourne Hall Gardens and finished off the afternoon with tea in the tearooms.
In September Adrian Farmer took us on a railway journey Derby to Matlock at our monthly meeting, and we also celebrated our annual birthday meal at The Hollybush in Church Broughton later in the month.
During the year 4 of our members have entered the County Quiz, securing 4th place in their venue. We have attended 2 council meetings, 2 group meetings, and supported open meetings at other local Wis in our group. 2 members joined the DFWI trip to Moselle Valley. Joyce Alman was a special guest at the DFWI Queens Birthday tea at headquarters due to the fact that she was the same age as the Queen this year. Maureen Allen retired from being WI rep on the Village Hall Committee for almost 42 years. Well done Maureen! The book reading group has continued to meet during the year and have devoured a varied amount of literature. We look forward to our new WI year.
